The travel review titled: Charles Dickens London Guided Walks and Tours, written by Richard Jones, was successful at appealing to the audience of individuals with an extreme interest in not only Charles Dickens' work, but also his personal life. This is evident as Jones goes into complete detail about the important places that contributed to Dickens' inspiration and the locations that were important to his childhood. This amount of specific detail would only engage individuals with interest in Dickens. Also, Jones had written a section about the characters in Dickens' novels. He states:
On each one of his walks through Dickensian London Richard will use extensive quotes from Dickens's novels and episodes from Dickens life to bring the streets through which you will be walking vividly to life. (Jones, Charles Dickens London Guided Walks and Tours)
Jones, appealing to his audience, was clever and provided information about where to find the characters from Dickens' stories, stating that the reader will have the opportunity to see these characters come to life. Based on this quote, Jones has done an admirable job at targeting the specific aforementioned audience and was successful at making these sites seem like an experience that a Dickens lover cannot pass up.
In addition, Jones was also able to achieve his desired purpose of informing the reader and persuading the reader to attend the guided walking tour. He provided the reader with preliminary information about both the tour and Dickens' life. For example, he says,
A writer is inevitably influenced and inspired by his or her personal experiences and surroundings, and Dickens was no exception. Indeed, London permeates the pages of practically every one of his novels - as well as the pages of many of his short stories and sketches - impressing itself indelibly on every scene and every character. (Jones, Charles Dickens London Guided Walks and Tours)
This quote shows Jones' skill as he was able to merge the information about Dickens and the tour into one idea. Furthermore, Jones was also able to persuade the reader through the careful use of language features. It is important to note that direct addresses can be very powerful when persuading. For instance, Jones says:
But our walks around the London of Charles Dickens will also take you to the locations that featured in his life, beginning with his formative years. (Jones, Charles Dickens London Guided Walks and Tours).
The direct address in this quote was deliberate to make it seem as if the reader has already agreed to join the tour, and Jones is explaining the amazing activities the reader will have the chance to experience. Moreover, the amount of adjectives used in this article truly brings the walking tour experience to life, making the reader want to attend. Overall, this article was competently written as it was able to provide a persuasive, engaging opinion while keeping a positive tone and informing. This allowed readers to know that the Dickens walking tour is a necessary visit.
