Throughout this course I have learned numerous skills such as listening, critical thinking, reading, speaking and writing. By completing the multiple practices and assessments in the course, I no longer feel nervous to write a piece. I learned how to accurately use structure, literary devices, and different sentence types to support my thesis and improve my work. I have greatly improved my writing skills since the beginning of this term and have learned how to properly appreciate my own work.

Furthermore, my creative writing has changed drastically throughout the course. When I look back at my first creative writing piece from this course, I am able to see how much I have learned about how to correctly describe the story and engage the reader by using a range of punctuation, sentence types and vocabulary.

In addition, at the beginning of the term I believed I was able to effectively write an analytical piece; however, I have since learned that to fully analyze a piece of work many interpretations must be completed and related to the thesis with a specific structure. I was also sure to make note that this all must be done in a manner suitable for the correct audience.

ENG3U has emphasized the development of literacy, communication, critical thinking and creative thinking skills necessary for success in ENG4U as well as my daily life. My career choice of being a physician highly depends on my ability to write, read, and speak sophisticatedly. I am thankful for the methods taught in ENG3U and am sure it will prove more than useful in my future.

The following five articles are the assignments that I am most proud of.

Before attending ENG3U, I had never heard of or written an annotated bibliography. Throughout the course, I have learned how to properly write one and am very proud of how far I have come. I was able to grasp the importance of interpreting quotes in a way to support my thesis and also how crucial the source's reliability is. For this piece, I found it interesting to see and analyze how the different writing styles of Emily Bronte and Tupac Shakur compare.

Anecdotal writing is a brief story written to prove a larger point. The purpose of this assignment was to write about a day in the life in shakespearean times. I chose to write this story from a woman's perspective to show this larger point of how women did everything for their husbands at that time. I quickly learned that in order to portray my desired effect, I would need to make my writing more creative, factual (knowledge of shakerean times) and filled with emotion. In the end, I was able to successfully include all these elements in my piece in a clear manner. I was very proud of myself after writing this piece because I was able to learn and discover the process necessary to write this piece to the best of my ability.

Adapting one story to another was an unfamiliar concept for me. In fact, I had to redo the entire assignment because I thought the characters of The Lion King were supposed to go into the story of Hamlet. I eventually learned what I was supposed to do and felt pride in my resilience and my determination to learn and understand how to write an effective adaptation. I learned to analyze/interpret the important moments and scenes from both stories and combine them to make a scene that would heavily impact the reader. This was an important assignment in my ENG3U journey as it taught me to have persistence and tenacity.

This assignment was difficult as this analysis of an excerpt from The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas was completed without seeing the excerpt beforehand; no previous research was allowed. I had to quickly understand and learn what an analysis must include. It was a given that it needed to include quotes and context; however, I learned that it also must include a target audience, a structure analysis and multiple different interpretations for one quote. This piece made me proud because it is when I realized that I was learning something new in every assignment. Moreover, this assignment allowed me to feel confident in my writing as I was able to see that although I went in blind, I was still able to properly and effectively analyze the excerpt.

This assignment required me to rewrite a section of The Hate U Give using the same structure and word choices as the author, Angie Thomas. This was another important assignment for me as it was the first time I felt like a true writer as I was rewriting a story with a significant meaning. For this piece I had to research Angie Thomas' reasoning for writing this book which allowed me to write in a way which meets the purpose of the her writing. Determining the sentence type, punctuation and overall structure used was extremely important in this piece as I had to match Thomas' style. After this assignment was completed I felt so satisfied with my piece that I encouraged my parents and friends to read it as well.
